First Day of School Time Capsules – Great for Homeschool

As a homeschool mom, I love coming up with new ways to create a special school experience for my children. The first day of school is such a wonderful day, and as such, I wanted to come up with a fun first day of school craft to make it extra special. These first day of school time capsules are a great way to capture memories and kick off a wonderful new year of homeschooling.

If you homeschool, you know the feeling of wanting to make your first day special. A great first day of school craft is a special way to start the year and get your kids excited to learn.

*And of course, you can do this any time in your first few weeks – it doesn’t just have to be the first day.

Create lasting memories with a First Day of School Time Capsule for children and homeschooling families.

In just one year, your children are going to grow and learn and change in so many wonderful ways. These time capsules are the perfect first day of school craft to track that beautiful progress. One of my favorite parts is the self-portrait. I love watching my children progress as little artists in just one year.

The kids always love to find out the changes in their interests. Their favorite books, shows, colors, etc. will probably all change as they go through another year. How fun to open your time capsule at the end of the school year and laugh and smile together as you look at these changes.

How to Make Your Own Homeschool First Day of School Time Capsule

  1. Find a jar with a lid
  2. Download the free printable questions and drawing activity that go with this time capsule (down below).
  3. Optional: Decorate the jar with ribbon, stickers, and paste the “School Year Time Capsule” Image on the front – feel free to write your child’s name on this label as well!
  4. Have your child write, or help them write, answers to the time capsule questions and cut them out. Use the blank pages to create your own additional questions. Fold the slips of paper up and place them in your jar.
  5. Have your child draw a self-portrait, fold it up, and place that in the jar as well.
  6. Close your jar tightly and place it somewhere safe until your child’s last day of school.
  7. Optional: On your last day of school, ask the same questions again and draw a new self-portrait. This will make the reveal even more fun as you can compare the beginning of the year to the end!
  8. On your last day of school, open up your time capsule and have fun reading the answers and seeing the self-portrait.
