Winter Homeschool Activities (with Free Unit Study)
If you’re in a winter rut and starting to get cabin fever, here are some fun winter homeschool activities to help get you through that hump. Embrace the coziness of the winter season with fun games, recipes, and books. Plus, enjoy a free winter unit study just for you at the end of this blog post!
There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens-Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV
Winter can be hard with little kids. I’ll be the first to admit, I envy the moms who live in mild climates and talk endlessly about the thousands of hours they spend outside with their kids. As much as I’d love to be that outdoorsy mama all year long, when temperatures hit single digits, that’s just not me. Especially with little ones who need 50 layers just to walk outside for 10 minutes. Not to say those outdoor moments aren’t important, but they definitely shrink as temperatures drop.
Instead, I’ve learned the only way out is in. Rather than fight the season, I’ve learned to embrace it. By creating a cozy and joyful home filled with special activities, those cooped-up days can be a blessing rather than a curse.

What age range are these activities for?
My children are currently 7, 4, and 1 years old. You’ll find the books, games, and a unit study geared towards those ages.
However, one thing I love about homeschooling is that you can tailor ANY content to fit your children’s needs and abilities. Especially if you have a variety of ages in your home. An older kid can benefit from younger children’s content by getting a chance to teach and help the little ones. A younger child can be raised up to more challenging content by observing the older kids and feeling a sense of inclusion.

Fun Games
Finding fun games to pass the time can be so important in the Winter. Without as much outdoor physical activity, it’s a good time to lean into some indoor games.
I’ve even taken the chance to teach my 6-year-old in particular some new card games, like solitaire.
Here are a few games we’ve been enjoying this Winter:
- Solitare
- Building houses with cards (an incredible test of patience and creativity)
- Go Fish
- Bingo (we use educational boards for added learning)
- Uno
- Puzzles
Comforting Recipes
There’s something about the cold weather that demands comfort food. I can’t eat fresh salads all Winter long. I need something cozy and warm. Not only do cozy meals set the tone for Winter, but baking desserts can be another way to pass the time with your kiddos.
Here are some cozy and fun recipes to try this season:
- Sourdough Pizza
- One-pan Creamy Gnocchi
- Acorn Squash Soup
- Oreo Marshmallow Bars
- Grain-Free Chocolate Chunk Cookies
Cozy Books
Here are a few fun books to cozy up and read with your kids this Winter. Reading is the perfect Winter homeschool activity. Especially if sickness strikes (God forbid, but tis’ the season). I’ll list a few of our favorite books here – not all “winter-themed” but all very fun nevertheless. You’ll also find some more book suggestions in the printable Winter unit study below. :)
- The Princess in Black and the Giant Problem by Shannon Hale
- The Chronicles of Narnia Box Set by C.S. Lewis
- Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg by Gail Carson Levine
- Aesop’s Fables
